A Contemporary Courtyard
This client built a beautiful contemporary home on the top of a mountain in Brevard.
I was asked to develop a garden plan for the property.
The homeowners intended to install the plan themselves a bit at a time,
starting with the entry courtyard.
The design needed to compliment the contemporary architecture of the home,
and also help anchor the home to the natural surroundings.
The courtyard plan acknowledges the modern structure,
while the surrounding gardens are more relaxed and create a
transition to the woodland in which it's set.
The courtyard design steps down in three short walls to handle the slight slope.
The short walls carry through the pattern of columns in the massive
trellis system and sweep up to either side of the steps opposite.
The angular lines of the courtyard walls and trellis are softened with
a variety of evergreen and deciduous plants, including some small and
highly ornamental trees. Originally, a seating area was planned in
the center terrace and an a series of 2 foot by 2 foot cut flagstones,
asymmetrically arranged, was designed to accommodate this table and
chair arrangement. This feature has yet to be installed.
