Garden design is a process
with three major steps: Interview & Program, Preliminary Design, and Final
Design. These steps ensure that the Final Design is on target with what you
want from your garden design.
Interview & Program
The
design process starts with questions, lot’s of questions. We’ll discuss your
objectives for your design project, how you intend to use your outdoor space,
who will use the space (kids, pets), the garden styles
you like, the amount of time you will spend caring for the garden and so on.
The
result of the interview is a Program document that states the objectives for the
project and all considerations for the design. This will keep the design “on
track” and ensure that the final design meets all of the goals and criteria we
agreed to at the beginning of the project.
Preliminary Design
Once we have a Program, we’ll begin the design. The Preliminary Design is the
concept phase. It consists of a concept sketch of the new garden, along with
plant specifications for all major trees and shrubs, themes and color schemes
for planting beds, and any special features or hardscape elements.
We’ll meet to review the Preliminary Design and discuss what you like and what
needs additional work.
Final Design
The
Final Design reflects your feedback from the preliminary design. The Final
Design includes a scale drawing (blueprint), details for hardscape elements, a
comprehensive plant list and instructions for planting and ongoing care of the
plant material in the plan.
