Rose Bushes - Climbing Roses

The Blaze rose is a low maintenance rose that has pure red flowers. Blaze roses provide continuous bloom through fall.It has a mild fragrance with an average diameter 3". The Blaze climbing rose repeats its bloom again later in the season.

Don Juan Rose

The Rose Don Juan, displays full, cupped, dark red blooms that are carried above dark green leaves. The large double blooms of this climber appear throughout the summer and fall. Don Juan is a good choice for placement by walls, pillars, and trellis'. The blooms have an intense fragrance. This plant should be placed in full sun and will attain a mature height of 12 to 14 feet.

Fourth of July Rose

The Rose Fourth of July produces an eye-popping array of large clusters of ruffled blooms that are striped red and white with gold stamens. This very fragrant climber produces long lasting blooms that blooms and reblooms in the very first season. This rose is hardy and has very good vigor. The flashy green foliage provides a great backgound for the colorful blooms. The climbing canes will reach 12 to 14 feet at matuity.

Golden Showers Rose

The Rose Golden Showers produces sunny yellow, ruffled blooms that smell of licorice and they bloom from spring until frost. The yellow flowers are semi-doubles and can be as large as 5 1/2 inches across. The blooms will age to a creamy white. This climbing rose will attain heights of 8 to 10 feet at matuity. The flowers bloom from May until frost and are set against the backgound of dark green, glossy foliage. Use this attractive free-blooming plant for walls, arbors or other structures.

Iceberg Climbing Rose

The Climbing Iceberg rose is a climbing sport of the famous floribunda that is extremely vigorous. The supple canes need support but can be deployed against a painted surface because it can be considered virtually disease free. Given enough space to develop it will produce a shower of bloom turning it into a virtual snow bank. Our shipping containers require that all plants be cut to the same height with the result that the first year’s performance is primarily providing growth to support the following year’s bloom, so please be patient.

Josephs Coat Rose

The Rose Joseph's Coat produce clustered buds that open to flowers that change from golden yellow to orange and crimson. The loosely formed double flowers are borne in clusters on an upright plant with glossy leaves. Joseph's Coat can be grown as a small climber and they are great for hedges. This easy to care for rose is also a rebloomer.

New Dawn Rose

The New Dawn rose is a strong grower and is unusually hardy and disease resistant. 'New Dawn' has long been a favorite climber. New Dawn roses have double pink, fragrant flowers that fade to soft pink are carried over a long season.It has healthy, dark green disease resistant foliage and is a rose with few faults and a long flowering season, even carrying a few blooms in the winter. It blooms spring and repeats in the summer. The New Dawn was a World Fereration of Rose Society Hall of Fame inductee in 1997.

Purezza Rose

The Rose Purezza produces generous amounts of large white flowers. Purezza are mainly noted for their ability to rebloom. These thornless climbers can grow to 15 to 20 feet in size. Another unique feature is their buds which look like pearls. They can be trained to climb, trained on a pillar, or trained as a rambler. Purezza also displays good disease resistance to blackspot, mildew, and rust. This rose blooms on old wood so prune after flowering.

Rambling Red Rose

The Rambling Red rose is a fully double rose with rich medium-red blooms borne in clusters on a vigorous, disease-resistant plant. It is a winter hardy climber/rambler with strong pliable canes.Rambling Red roses are an outstanding addition to the ranks of winter hardy climbers. It is hardy in zones 3-9.

William Baffin Rose

The William Baffin rose is a Canadian Explorer rose with glossy light green foliage, blooming from early to mid July until frost. It is an unsented rose which can grow to a height of 7 ft.William Baffin roses are vigorous and disease-resistant. It is one of the hardiest and most useful roses for northern gardens.

Zephirine Drouhin Rose

The Zephirine Drouhin rose has a fragrance which fills the air with each large bloom. It prospers in alkaline soil, pollution, and shade. It's also a beautiful rose, opening large, sweetly fragrant, deep rose flowers (on nearly thornless stems) throughout the season.Zephirine Drouhin roses are perfect for covering a wall or climbing over an arch. The coppery-purple new growth is a vivid contrast.

ACORN HILL

Acorn Hill is the name we’ve given to our home. Situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, it is so named for the thousands of acorns produced by the red oaks growing here. We spent years looking for just the right spot. Some of the most important criteria were plenty of room to garden and space for our menagerie of dogs and cats to safely run and play. And we found it here.

We have undertaken several big outdoor projects and have many more planned. I have been taking pictures and making notes, which in essence constitute a journal of these projects. I thought it might be interesting and perhaps helpful to share our progress. So in addition to my Garden Journal where I routinely note what’s happening around the garden, we’ve added Acorn Hill Garden Projects to our site and intend to update it as we complete specific projects. The Acorn Hill Garden Projects detail specific projects from start to finish with notes on what we learned in the process.

When we first came to Acorn Hill, one of the first things I realized was that I had more great ideas than I had time, energy, or money. I had so many things that I hoped to accomplish the first year, but luckily we didn’t get very much done. I say luckily because when starting a garden in a new place it is critical to observe, for at least one full cycle of the seasons, how the seasons change the existing landscape, how the views from your house differ in summer and winter, and how you and your family use your outdoor space. So lesson number one was be patient. Something I’ve been known to have trouble with.

The projects listed below are things we’ve done so far, and things we intend to complete in the near future. As I write the story of each, I’ll include my thoughts on what we’ve done right and what we’ve learned from the things that haven’t gone as planned. I hope you find these stories useful and, if nothing else, amusing. We try to have fun at whatever we do, otherwise, why do it!
