Aaron Caladium

The Caladium Aaron, 'Caladium', has impressive white with green edged foliage. Being one of the largest Caladiums, Aaron has white centers and the veins gradually creep into the deep green edges. It has a plant height of 18-20 and a spread of 12-18. Aaron should be planted in full sun and in a well-drained area. The colors are extremely showy from July to frost. Try planting Aaron in containers for the patio, in window boxes or to brighten up you perennial garden.

Aurora Bleeding Heart

The Bleeding Heart Aurora, 'Dicentra Aurora, is a fast-growing perennial with creamy white, heart-shaped flowers. The blooms look wonderful against its grayish foliage. Dicentra Aurora has a plant height of 14 and a width of 20. It is heat tolerant and needs moist soil. Do not let it dry out. Dicentra will bloom from May to September and is a major attractor to butterflies. Aurora makes excellent cut flowers, in mass with groundcovers, or in potted containers. Being an old fashioned plant, it is a must in any landscape.

The Centaurea Bachelor's Button, Centaurea montana, also know as Cornflower and Blue Bottle, has small thistle-like single flowers at the end of a delicate stem, being bright blue and very showy, with gray-green foliage. With a height of 24 and a plant width of 12-24, it is an excellent late summer to early fall bloomer. Use Centaurea Bachelor's Button massed in border fronts, cottage gardens or naturalized areas. For planting with other perennials, try Illumination Vinca, Variegated Sedum or Echinacea Purple Coneflower.

The Daisy 'Shasta' Leucanthemum Becky Daisy, leucanthemum superbum, is the longest blooming daisy in the Leucanthemum family. With bright, large, white beautiful flowers held above its dark green foliage, it has a plant height of 3 and a plant spread of 18-24. Being Perennial of the Year in 2003, one can see why. It also is great for formal and informal gardens, as cut flowers, in mass plantings or in the perennial border. This low maintenance perennial is great for first time gardeners.

The Hollyhock family is made up of a rather large group that exhibits tall stature (4-6') and being biennial in nature. Although Hollyhocks are short lived, they reseed themselves. The large blooms of 'Chater's Mix Hollyhock' flower in the summer months. Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences. The foliage, said to make this plant a real winner, is deep green, almost succulent looking and extremely shinny. Delosperma has a plant spread of 12-24 and a height of 4. Hot conditions keep the flowers blooming most of the summer and it requires little to no care. Delosperma looks great as a ground cover in a rock garden or in front of a perennial border.

Herman's Pride False Lamium

The False Lamium Herman's Pride, 'Lamiastrum galeobdolon', also known as Yellow Archangel, is an eye-catching perennial in any garden. With its silver and green veined foliage, the bright yellow blooms add color to the plant. It has a plant height of 10-15 and a spread of 2-3. Hermans Pride should be planted in partial to full shade in a well drained area and it tolerats poor soil conditions and drought. Blooms will appear late spring to early summer. The Sagina Irish Moss, 'Sagina subulata', is one of the most popular ground covers around. The lush, deep green foliage stays compact and produces tiny white flowers. It is extremely dense and spready by creeping stems to form it mossy carpet. Irish Moss is not known for its flowering but its foliage. The tiny white flowers will appear late spring into early summer. Use Irish Moss between paving stones, rock walls, as an edging plant or as a small-scale groundcover.

It has a plant height of 3 and a spread of 36-48. Lemon Sunset will flower its first year, June to August. Oenothera requires full sun and needs a good drainage site. Try planting Lemon Sunset with Salvia, Achillea or Columbine. For a wonderful sun perennial, one will not want to leave Lemon Sunset out of their garden.

Little Joe Dwarf Joe Pye Weed
|
The Little Joe-Pye Weed, 'Eupatorium purpureum', is a wonderful lavender purple bloomer that stands 4 tall with a plant spread the 29-35. Little Joe-Pye Weed is more compact and shorter than other perennials in its family. With beautiful wine red stems that develop large green leaves, it is a definite attractor to butterflies and bees and it is deer resistant. Little Joe Pye Weed looks wonderful with Rudbeckia Black Eyed Susan, Aster Woods Purple, with ornamental grasses or in a perennial border. It is a great background plant but does need a lot of room to grow.

Little Spire Russian Sage
|
The Perovskia Little Spire Sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia, is an exciting new variety to the Sage family. Growing only 3 high with a plant spread of 12-18, it is one that should not be missed. The lavender-purple flowers make a great contrast with its silvery, fragrant foliage. Deadhead for repeat bloom time. It does need a well-drained area. Little Spire looks great anywhere in the garden. It is resistant to deer, attracts butterflies, an excellent choice for hot, dry gardens, and has attractive winter foliage.

Loraine Sunshine Oxeye
|
The Heliopsis Loraine Sunshine, 'Heliopsis helianthiodes', a Blooms of Bressingham plant, is a great combination of large, golden-yellow flowers and variegated foliage with green veins. Blooming from July till frost, this Heliopsis grows to 30 tall with a plant spread of 30. This easy to grow perennial attracts butterflies and is deer resistant. A wonderful addition to island beds or in the back or borders or as cut flowers. Loraine Sunshine may be slow to appear in the spring, but the blooms persist long after other perennials have completed their show. PP10690

Low Down Sunflower
|
The Sunflower Low Down, 'Helianthus angustifolius Low Down, a Blooms of Bressingham plant, is a dwarf form of Helianthus First Light. It has a solid mass of deep gold flowers. The fuzzy, linear green leaves make a wonderful contrast with the flowers. Low Down has a plant height of 12 and a spread of 20. Helianthus should be planted in full sun with average to well-drained soils. Try Helianthus as cut flowers, in the back of beds or borders, with Ornamental Grasses or Asters. Low Down will give a stunning explosion of color to any perennial garden. PP 13,197

Lucifer Crocosmia
|
The Montbretia Lucifer, 'Crocosmia 'Lucifer, is one of the newest Crocosmis on the market today. Its bright, flame-red flowers stand out from the rest. Being the hardiest members of its genus, the sword-shaped foliage adds to any landscape. Lucifer has a plant height of 36-42 and a plant spread of 30-36. It does need a well drained site and full sun, but will tolerate morning shade. Lucifer blooms in late summer to early fall, June through August. Try it as cut flowers or as a border plant in your perennial garden and it is also a major attractor to butterflies.

Luxuriant Bleeding Heart
|
The Bleeding Heart Luxuriant, 'Dicentra Luxuriant, is a fast-growing perennial with pink, heart-shaped flowers. The blooms look wonderful against its grayish foliage. Dicentra Luxuriant has a plant height of 12-15 and a width of 20. Dicentra should be planted in full sun but will tolerate morning shade. Dicentra will bloom from May to September and is a major attractor to butterflies. Luxuriant makes excellent cut flowers, in mass with groundcovers, or in potted containers. Being an old fashioned plant, it is a must in any landscape.

Mardi Gras Helen's Flower

The Helenium Mardi Gras, 'Helenium', a Blooms of Bressingham plant, also known as Sneezeweed or Helens Flower, is a very showy multicolored perennial. The flower colors are somewhat tie-dyed, orange-red-yellow, with a flower size of 1-2 and green foliage. Mardi Gras blooms from late June into early August. It has a plant height of 2 and a spread of 25. Try planting Helenium in the back of the border or in mass plantings with shrubs and grasses. If one needs color added to their garden, dont forget Helenium Mardi Gras.

The Monarda Marshall's Delight,Monarda didyma, also known as Bee Balm, Bergamont, Horsemint, Oswego Tea, is a clump-forming perennial that has tubular, two-lipped, hot pink flowers with dark green aromatic foliage. Marshall's Delight stands at 36 high and has a plant spread of 24-36 and blooms from July to August. Attracting hummingbirds, butterflies and bees, particularly when massed, Monarda provides color and contrast for the perennial border, wild garden, meadow, and herb garden or along ponds or streams.

Mesa Verde Ice Plant

The Hardy Ice Plant Mersa Verde, 'Delosperma Mersa Verde, is a wonderful ground cover that has single, dark salmon blooms. The foliage, which makes this plant a real winner, is deep green, almost succulent looking and extremely shinny. Delosperma has a plant spread of 12 and a height of 2. It does prefer dry and sandy soil and does not like wet soil in the winter. Hot conditions keep the flowers blooming most of the summer and it requires little to no care. Delosperma looks great as a ground cover in a rock garden or in front of a perennial border. PPAF

Miss Manners Obedient Plant

The Physostegia Miss Manners, Physostegia virginiana, also know as Obedient Plant, has bright white spiked flowers that are 18 tall and a plant spread of 18-24. Miss Manners blooms from June to September and the waxy, dark green foliage makes this plant a little different from other white blooming perennials. Try with darker colors such Hemerocallis Little Business, Platycodon Balloon Flower or Veronica Royal Candles.

Mrs. Bradshaw Geum

The Geum 'Mrs. Bradshaw, Geum chiloense, produces lovely scarlet, semi-double flowers that are shaped like small roses. Its fresh green, fuzzy foliage makes it different from the rest. Mrs. Bradshaw needs full sun but can tolerate afternoon shade, in moist well-drained soil. It is a perfect addition to any cottage garden, makes a wonderful combination with bright yellows, golds and true blues (like Delphiniums, Salvias), for borders and mass plantings and for cuttings.

Nigra Hollyhock

The Nigra Hollyhock, 'Alcea rosea', has large single, very dark maroon to almost black flowers. (The darkest flower in this family). The Hollyhock family is made up of a rather large group that exhibits tall stature (4-6') and is biennial in nature. Although they are short lived, they reseed themselves. The large blooms of 'Chater's Nigra Hollyhock' flower in the summer months. Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences. They are best planted in full sun in a well-drained area.

The Ligularia Othello Leopard Plant, Ligularia dentata, is a wonderful yellow-orange, daisy-like flower with huge leathery, toothed, heart-shaped, basal leaves. New leaves emerge purplish-red but turn to brownish-green. Blooming from July to August, Ligularia Othello has a plant height of 2 and a spread of 24-36. It must have moist soil and should never be allowed to dry out. Use Ligularia in group or mass plantings, woodland gardens, or along streams, ponds, pools or bog gardens.

The Peaches n Dreams Hollyhock, 'Alcea rosea', has double, creamy-peach flowers that are frosted with tints of raspberry-pink and apricot. It is a wonderful new array of pastels to add to the garden. The Hollyhock family is made up of a rather large group that exhibits tall stature (4-6') and is biennial in nature. The large blooms of Alcea Peaches n Dreams Hollyhock flower in the summer months. Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences. They are best planted in full sun in a well-drained area.

Pig Squeak Bergenia

The Bergenia 'Pig Squeak', Bergenia cordifolia, also known as Bay Doll, is a must to any garden. With its outstanding burgundy cabbage-like foliage in the fall and green foliage in the spring, it adds color and means to any garden. Bright pink flowers develop in April being 15 in height and a plant spread of 18-24. Bergenia works great in rock gardens, as a border, and provides strong contrast for most any other plant, especially Ferns and Dicentra. The plant is useful as a ground cover, growing slowly in dry areas and rapidly in constantly wet spots.

The Chelone Pink Turtlehead, Chelone obliqua, is a deep carmine pink wildflower that resembles snapdragons and heads of turtles. The dark green foliage makes Pink Turtlehead beautiful all year long. The flowers bloom from mind summer to early fall, with a plant height of 3 and a spread of 18-24. This low maintenance perennial is highly pest resistant and will look great under a tree canopy or in a colorful perennial bed. Try Pink Turtlehead with Echinacea Coneflower White Swan or Physostegia Miss Manners.

Plumbago Leadwort

The Ceratostigma Plumbago Leadwort, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, is a beautiful, fast growing ground cover with dark oval green foliage, turning to dark blue in late summer and early fall. The small blue flowers make this ground cover more unusual than the rest because of its late blooming time. Plumbago works great at the front of the perennial border, shrub borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It looks wonderful with Achillea Moonshine and Coreopsis Moonbeam.

Przewalskii Leopard Plant
|
The Ligularia Przewalskii Leopard Plant, Ligularia przewalskii, has a wonderful clear, yellow daisy-like flower with huge leathery, toothed, heart-shaped, basal leaves. New leaves emerge purplish-red but turn to brownish-green. Blooming from July to August, Ligularia Przewalskii has a plant height of 4 and a spread of 36. It must have moist soil and should never be allowed to dry out. Use Ligularia in group or mass plantings, as an accent plant, in woodland gardens, or along streams, ponds, pools or bog gardens.

Red Dragon

The Persicaria Red Dragon is a wonderful variety in the Persicaria family. With its superb, variegated maroon leaves with burgundy heart shaped centers and a white chevron, it has a plant height of 2 and a spread of 18-23. The flowers are white and bloom in June and July, but this plant is more noted for its foliage. It does need a well-drained area, making sure it is not over watered. Red Dragon will look great in any perennial garden, in mixed container, woodland edge or near ponds and streams.

Rosenkuppel Oregano
|
The Rosenkuppel Oregano, Origanum laevigatum, is a great ground cover used in mass or alone. It forms attractive mats of round dark green leaves that are the perfect backdrop for its beautiful, ornamental dark pink flowers. Its contrasting purple calyces really make this plant stand out amongst the rest. Blooming from August to October, it has a plant height of 15" and a width of 24". Oregano needs to be planted in a full sun area with well drained soil. Try planting with Pennisetum 'Little Bunny'.

Samantha Bellflower

The Bellflower Samantha, 'Campanula Samantha, has showy, compact blue-violet flowers with dark green foliage. The flowers are 1 wide and very fragrant. This ground cover is best used in rock gardens, as an edging or in tubs and pots. Samantha blooms from early summer to late spring and will sometimes repeat flowering in autumn. Samantha should be planted in full sun, but will tolerate morning shade and will do well in all types of soil. Try Blue Waterfall with Coreopsis Early Sunrise, Rudbeckia Viettes Little Suzy or Anthemis Susan Mitchell.

The Spiderwort Satin Doll, 'Tradescantia andersoniana', has compact and upright green foliage with large pink flowers. The flowers open for one day but new blooms appear from June to October. With a plant height of 12-15 and a spread of 18-24, it is one that should not be missed. The contrast of the flower color and foliage make it a definite eye catcher. Satin Doll mixes beautifully with wild and naturalistic woodlands, in any perennial bed or as a border plant and attracts butterflies. Scotch Moss

The Sagina Golden Scotch Moss, 'Sagina subulata', is one of the most popular ground covers around. The lush, yellow-green foliage stays compact and produces tiny white flowers. It is extremely dense and spready by creeping stems to form it mossy carpet. Golden Scotch Moss is not known for its flowering but its foliage. The tiny white flowers will appear late spring into early summer. Use Golden Irish Moss between paving stones, rock walls, as an edging plant or as a small-scale groundcover.

ACORN HILL
Acorn Hill is the name
we’ve given to our home. Situated in the
Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina, it is so named for the thousands of acorns
produced by the red oaks growing here. We
spent years looking for just the right spot.
Some of the most important criteria were plenty of room to garden and
space for our menagerie of dogs and cats to safely run and play. And we found it here.
We have undertaken
several big outdoor projects and have many more planned. I have been taking pictures and making notes,
which in essence constitute a journal of these projects. I thought it might be interesting and perhaps
helpful to share our progress. So in
addition to my Garden Journal
where I routinely note what’s happening around
the garden, we’ve added Acorn Hill Garden Projects
to our site and intend to
update it as we complete specific projects.
The Acorn Hill Garden Projects detail specific projects from start to
finish with notes on what we learned in the process.
When we first came to
Acorn Hill, one of the first things I realized was that I had more great ideas
than I had time, energy, or money. I had
so many things that I hoped to accomplish the first year, but luckily we didn’t
get very much done. I say luckily
because when starting a garden in a new place it is critical to observe, for at
least one full cycle of the seasons, how the seasons change the existing
landscape, how the views from your house differ in summer and winter, and how
you and your family use your outdoor space.
So lesson number one was be
patient. Something I’ve been known
to have trouble with.
The projects listed below are things we’ve done so far, and
things we intend to complete in the near future. As I write the story of each, I’ll include my
thoughts on what we’ve done right and what we’ve learned from the things that
haven’t gone as planned. I hope you find
these stories useful and, if nothing else, amusing. We try to have fun at whatever we do,
otherwise, why do it!
