Perennials - Geranium

The Geranium 'Ann Thompson', dislays gold tinted foliage which forms a low-spreading mound that gives rise to a profusion of 1" wide, dark magenta flowers. It has a plant width of 24-36” and a height of 6-8”. ‘Ann Thompson’ Geranium needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall. It is a superb plant for cottage gardens, container growing, borders, rock gardens, shade gardens or informal borders in mass plantings. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies and it is very disease and deer resistant.

Bertie Crug Geranium

The Geranium 'Bertie Crug' is a lovely, easy to grow little perennial Geranium with chocolate leaves and pink flowers. Blooms all summer and creates a delightful carpet of color. super hardy geranium noted for it's beautiful foliage that is deep green with bronze highlights, turning a wonderful cherry red with cool fall weather. It may bloom heavily again in fall if the foliage is sheared after the first bloom. Try this Geranium scrambling over a rock wall or along a garden path - Spectacular!

Biokovo Geranium

The Geranium ‘Biokovo’, Geranium x cantabrigiense, produces white flowers with light pink veins and stamens. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 12-18” and a height of 6-8”. ‘Biokovo’ Geranium needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall. ‘Biokovo’ Geranium, being drought tolerant, needs a full sun area with some shade in the afternoon. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies andit is very disease and deer resistant.

Brookside Geranium

The Geranium ‘Brookside’ has rich, sapphire-blue flowers that bloom from June till August. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 23-27” and a height of 18”. ‘Brookside’ Geranium, being drought tolerant, needs a full sun area with some shade in the afternoon. For best results, plant in a dry to moist area in a well-drained site. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies and it is very disease and deer resistant. A great plant for a beginner gardener.

Johnsons Blue Geranium

The Geranium ‘Johnson's Blue’, Geranium x 'Johnson's Blue', has rich sky-blue flowers that fade to pear gray as they mature, blooming from June till August. Thy Royal Horticultural Society gave a prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to ‘Johnson’s Blue’, and one can see why. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 23-27” and a height of 18”. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies and it is very disease and deer resistant. A great plant for a beginner gardener.

Jolly Bee Geranium

The Geranium Jolly Bee, 'Pelargonium', a Proven Winners selection, has rich, deep-blue flowers with white eyes that bloom from June till August. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 12” and a height of 8-12”. ‘Jolly Bee’ needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall. It is a superb plant for cottage gardens, container growing, borders or informal borders in mass plantings. There is an attaction to bees and butterflies and it is very disease and deer resistant. A great plant for a beginner gardener.

Midnight Reiter Geranium

The Geranium Midnight Reiter, 'Pelargonium', has rich, true blue flowers that bloom from June till August. With its beautiful dark purple foliage, it has a plant width of 12” and a height of 6”. (If grounded in shade, the foliage turns green with purple highlights.) ‘Midnight Reiter’ needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall. It is a superb plant for cottage gardens, container growing, borders or informal borders in mass plantings. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies and it is very disease and deer resistant. A great plant for a beginner gardener.

Patricia Geranium

The Geranium 'Patricia' is a vigorous sterile hybrid of G. psilostemon, and an exceptionally long bloomer. Magenta flowers - superb mid-border plant.These low growing mounds of dark green leaves topped with pastel blooms make geraniums an unequaled addition to the perennial border. Their carefree growing habits make them an ideal low maintenance plant that will grow anywhere and provide years of beauty.

Pink Geranium

The Geranium ‘Pink’, Geranium sanguineum, has a rich magenta mallow-like flower that blooms from June untill August. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 18-24” and a height of 15”. ‘Pink Geranium’ needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall.It is a superb plant for cottage gardens, container growing, borders or informal borders in mass plantings. There is a somewhat attraction to bees and butterflies but it is very disease and deer resistant.

Rozanne Geranium

The Geranium Rozanne, 'Pelargonium', a Blooms of Bressingham plant, has large, violet blue flowers with white eyes that bloom from June till August. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 24” and a height of 18”. ‘’Rozanne’ needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall. It is a superb plant for cottage gardens, container growing, borders or informal borders in mass plantings. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies and it is very disease and deer resistant. Sanguineum Album Geranium

The Geranium ‘Sanguineum Album’, Geranium sanguineum, produces pastel blooms. With its beautiful dark green foliage, it has a plant width of 18-23” and a height of 6-8”. ‘Sanguineum Album’ Geranium needs to be cut back in early summer for repeat bloom time in the fall. ‘Sanguineum Album’ Geranium, being drought tolerant, needs a full sun area with some shade in the afternoon. Tiny Monster Geranium

The Geranium 'Tony Monster', Hybrid of G. sanguineum, is sterile so it flowers nonstop June through August. The blooms are large and are a bright magneta color. Tony Monsters originated from the nursery of Germany's famous Countess Helen Von Stein. The Geranium family is well known for its stunning fall colors that include reds, oranges, and yellows. It is a superb plant for cottage gardens, container growing, borders or informal borders in mass plantings. There is an attraction to bees and butterflies andit is very disease and deer resistant.

ACORN HILL

Acorn Hill is the name we’ve given to our home. Situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, it is so named for the thousands of acorns produced by the red oaks growing here. We spent years looking for just the right spot. Some of the most important criteria were plenty of room to garden and space for our menagerie of dogs and cats to safely run and play. And we found it here.

We have undertaken several big outdoor projects and have many more planned. I have been taking pictures and making notes, which in essence constitute a journal of these projects. I thought it might be interesting and perhaps helpful to share our progress. So in addition to my Garden Journal where I routinely note what’s happening around the garden, we’ve added Acorn Hill Garden Projects to our site and intend to update it as we complete specific projects. The Acorn Hill Garden Projects detail specific projects from start to finish with notes on what we learned in the process.

When we first came to Acorn Hill, one of the first things I realized was that I had more great ideas than I had time, energy, or money. I had so many things that I hoped to accomplish the first year, but luckily we didn’t get very much done. I say luckily because when starting a garden in a new place it is critical to observe, for at least one full cycle of the seasons, how the seasons change the existing landscape, how the views from your house differ in summer and winter, and how you and your family use your outdoor space. So lesson number one was be patient. Something I’ve been known to have trouble with.

The projects listed below are things we’ve done so far, and things we intend to complete in the near future. As I write the story of each, I’ll include my thoughts on what we’ve done right and what we’ve learned from the things that haven’t gone as planned. I hope you find these stories useful and, if nothing else, amusing. We try to have fun at whatever we do, otherwise, why do it!
