American Dream Coreopsis

The Coreopsis American Dream, Coreopsis rosea, has a rosy pink daisy-like flower with a yellow center. In the Tickseed family, the dark green fernlike, thin and delicate foliage makes a great contrast to any garden. Blooming from June to October, American Dream stands at 15 tall and a plant spread of 18-24. It is very effective in naturalized areas, rock and cottage gardens, ground cover or wild gardens. No garden should be without it.

Crème Brulee Coreopsis

The Coreopsis Crème Brulee is new to the market and has bright deep yellow flowers that blooms from June through October. In the Tickseed family, Crème Brulee has larger flowers than most Coreopsis in its family. Crème Brulees have a plant height of 24 and a spread of 18. The bright green thread leaf foliage makes a great contrast with the flower color. Coreopsis Crème Brulee looks great with any type of grass, in borders or mass plantings in sunny gardens.

Early Sunrise Coreopsis

The Coreopsis Early Sunrise, Coreopsis grandiflora, is a definite superstar among yellow flowers. This All-American Selections Gold Metal Award Winner has yellow flowers flush to orange-yellow near the center and bloom June through October. In the Tickseed family, the dark green thread leaf foliage makes a great contrast with the flower color. It should be cut backing early and late summer to extend the bloom period. Coreopsis Early Sunrise looks great with any type of grass, in borders or mass plantings in sunny gardens.

Limerock Passions Coreopsis

The Coreopsis Limerock Passions is a sport of Coreopsis 'Limerock Ruby'. It has beautiful lavender pink, glossy flowers that cover the finely cut foliage. The dark green thread-like foliage makes a great contrast with its flower color, blooming from June through October. Limerock Passions is extremely drought tolerant with a plant height of 16 and a spread of 34. Limerock Ruby Coreopsis

Coreopsis Moonbeam looks great with Coreopsis Sweet Dreams, and with any type of grass, in borders or mass plantings in sunny gardens. No garden should be without it.

Pink Coreopsis

The Coreopsis 'Pink', Coreopsis rosea, is the first pink, with a yellow center, flowering variety of the Coreopsis family. Sweet Dreams is extremely drought tolerant with a plant height of 18 and a spread of 18-24. With cool autumn weather, the flowers make an even more outstanding color scheme. Tequilla Sunrise Coreopsis

The Coreopsis Tequilla Sunrise is a very exciting new variety. In the Tickseed family, the gorgeous variegated olive-green foliage, turning to mahogany in the fall, and cream to yellow flowers with a red eye, is a great addition to any garden. Blooming from June to October, it has a plant height of 12 and a spread of 10-12. It is very effective in naturalized areas, rock and cottage gardens or wild gardens. No garden should be without it.

Zagreb Coreopsis

The Coreopsis Zagreb, Coreopsis verticillata, is a prolific bloomer of bright yellow flowers that bloom from June through October. Winner of the 2001 RHS Award of Garden Merit, Coreopsis Zagreb is a little shorter than the rest of the Coreopsis family. With a plant height of 15 and a spread of 12-18, its delicate dark green foliage has an airy and delicate appearance. It is very effective in naturalized areas, rock and cottage gardens or wild gardens. No garden should be without it.

ACORN HILL
Acorn Hill is the name
we’ve given to our home. Situated in the
Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina, it is so named for the thousands of acorns
produced by the red oaks growing here. We
spent years looking for just the right spot.
Some of the most important criteria were plenty of room to garden and
space for our menagerie of dogs and cats to safely run and play. And we found it here.
We have undertaken
several big outdoor projects and have many more planned. I have been taking pictures and making notes,
which in essence constitute a journal of these projects. I thought it might be interesting and perhaps
helpful to share our progress. So in
addition to my Garden Journal
where I routinely note what’s happening around
the garden, we’ve added Acorn Hill Garden Projects
to our site and intend to
update it as we complete specific projects.
The Acorn Hill Garden Projects detail specific projects from start to
finish with notes on what we learned in the process.
When we first came to
Acorn Hill, one of the first things I realized was that I had more great ideas
than I had time, energy, or money. I had
so many things that I hoped to accomplish the first year, but luckily we didn’t
get very much done. I say luckily
because when starting a garden in a new place it is critical to observe, for at
least one full cycle of the seasons, how the seasons change the existing
landscape, how the views from your house differ in summer and winter, and how
you and your family use your outdoor space.
So lesson number one was be
patient. Something I’ve been known
to have trouble with.
The projects listed below are things we’ve done so far, and
things we intend to complete in the near future. As I write the story of each, I’ll include my
thoughts on what we’ve done right and what we’ve learned from the things that
haven’t gone as planned. I hope you find
these stories useful and, if nothing else, amusing. We try to have fun at whatever we do,
otherwise, why do it!
