The Pansy Accord Black Beauty, 'Viola x wittrockiana', produces black flowers that appear on uniform plants. The blooms are two inches across and are eye catching being completely black. This variety blooms all season and is a great conversation starter for your garden. Pansies make an ideal plant for high altitude gardens, as well as early and late season plantings at lower elevations where the plants blooms especially well in spring and fall. Mass them in an area or an entire bed with for a striking spring effect. They also are great in windowsills and containers.

Delta True Blue Pansy

The Pansy Delta True Blue, 'Viola x wittrockiana', produces true blue flowers that appear brightly colorful against a green backdrop in bright sunlight. This unique and attractive plant grows 6 to 8 inches with a 2 inch blue flower. Pansies make an ideal plant for high altitude gardens, as well as early and late season plantings at lower elevations where the plants blooms especially well in spring and fall. Fama Deep Orange Pansy

The Pansy Fama Deep Orange, 'Viola x wittrockiana', produces deep orange flowers that appear brightly colorful against a green backdrop in bright sunlight. The Fama Deep Orange Pansies unique color that will draw attention in any garden. This unique and attractive plant grows 6 to 8 inches with a 2 inch orange flower. Mass them in an area or an entire bed with Pansies for a striking spring effect. They also are great in windowsills and containers. The deep orange color makes this a great mix with Accord Black Beauty.

Purple Rain Pansy

The Pansy Purple Rain, 'Viola x wittrockianais', is most unique in that it is a mounding, cascading pansy, perfect as a border plant in the landscape or ideally suited to baskets, planters and window boxes. The dark purple flowers with hints of blue in the center make it an attractive choice for gardeners. The Purple Rain Pansy pansy reachs heights of 12 to 18 inches without a leggy look. This free flowering variety that is ideal for hanging baskets, flower towers, pouches, and groundcovers. It is the most cold tolerant pansy available with excellent overwintering capabilities.

Ultima Morpho Pansy

The Pansy Ultima Morpho,' Pansy Ultima Morpho', is an Fleuroselect Gold Medal Winner and an All American Selections Winner and is named after the Morpho butterfly from Costa Rica, which is also blue and yellow. This delicate pastel blue and yellow pansy produces variable combinations of color on compact, continuously flowering plants. Named after the beautiful 'Morpho' butterfly, this variety is extremely heat tolerant and vigorous. The distinctive bicolor blooms show mid-blue upper petals, with bright yellow lower petals and "whiskers".

ACORN HILL

Acorn Hill is the name we’ve given to our home. Situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, it is so named for the thousands of acorns produced by the red oaks growing here. We spent years looking for just the right spot. Some of the most important criteria were plenty of room to garden and space for our menagerie of dogs and cats to safely run and play. And we found it here.

We have undertaken several big outdoor projects and have many more planned. I have been taking pictures and making notes, which in essence constitute a journal of these projects. I thought it might be interesting and perhaps helpful to share our progress. So in addition to my Garden Journal where I routinely note what’s happening around the garden, we’ve added Acorn Hill Garden Projects to our site and intend to update it as we complete specific projects. The Acorn Hill Garden Projects detail specific projects from start to finish with notes on what we learned in the process.

When we first came to Acorn Hill, one of the first things I realized was that I had more great ideas than I had time, energy, or money. I had so many things that I hoped to accomplish the first year, but luckily we didn’t get very much done. I say luckily because when starting a garden in a new place it is critical to observe, for at least one full cycle of the seasons, how the seasons change the existing landscape, how the views from your house differ in summer and winter, and how you and your family use your outdoor space. So lesson number one was be patient. Something I’ve been known to have trouble with.

The projects listed below are things we’ve done so far, and things we intend to complete in the near future. As I write the story of each, I’ll include my thoughts on what we’ve done right and what we’ve learned from the things that haven’t gone as planned. I hope you find these stories useful and, if nothing else, amusing. We try to have fun at whatever we do, otherwise, why do it!
